What is Anxiety?

While you have probably heard a lot about anxiety, especially as the stigma surrounding mental health has dissipated over the past couple years, you might not know exactly what it is, although you have definitely experienced it before. Anxiety is an emotion that is essentially characterized as an unpleasant state of inner turmoil regarding anticipated events or uncontrollable aspects within someone’s life. This state can involve worrying, panic, uneasiness, nervous coping habits, muscular tension, restlessness, fatigue, and problems in concentration.

The feelings of anxiety can be frustrating at best, and debilitating at worst. Most of us experience some form of anxiety almost every day, but for some, the experience of anxiety happens most moments of most days. For some, this could mean an anxiety disorder, like generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or a specific phobia; these disorders involve stronger and more consistent feelings of anxiety and fear, and can be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. However, even average experiences of anxiety on a day-to-day basis can be truly unpleasant for anyone, and are worth considering a solution for.

Counseling Sessions for Anxiety

If you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, or simply feel anxious and would like to know why, and how to reduce it, counseling sessions from Accepting Therapy can help. Our team of counseling and therapy experts are experienced as they are dedicated to helping your work through and understand your personal feelings of anxiety and how you can mitigate those feelings. An anxiety therapy session will look different for each client, and our counselors will implement different strategies depending on their particular anxieties and experiences. These strategies could involve a variety of lifestyle changes or a deeper understanding of certain mental processes through certain therapy techniques; a common and consistently effective method is cognitive behavioral therapy, which attempts to challenge and change the cognitive distortions that our minds can create, distortions which lead to a reinforcement of our own worries, fears, and concerns and can be reflected in other thoughts or behaviors.

Counseling sessions are not so cut and dry as medication or surgery; in order to improve, progress, and grow through any struggles and worries you might be experiencing, there has to be a commitment to understanding more about yourself, and your mind. Our experienced counselors are here to guide you through that process, and provide the perspective and therapeutic knowledge to reduce your experiences of anxiety, and improve your daily life and mindset.
